Ukrainian

Translate Ukrainian, signal or no signal.

Typed Ukrainian translation runs on your iPhone with nothing connected. The camera needs a signal: an iPhone cannot read the Ukrainian script offline, so a scan taken without one is kept and translated when you are back online.

Typing works with no signal

Download the Ukrainian pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.

The camera needs a connection

An iPhone cannot read the Ukrainian script offline at all. With a signal the photograph is read and translated; without one the scan is kept and translated the moment you are back online, so the sign is not lost.

Speech depends on your iPhone

Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Ukrainian rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.

Two real ones, printed and photographed

Both went through the app on an iPhone from pages we had printed, so the Ukrainian is known rather than guessed. What came back is below it, unedited.

A pharmacy label

Printed on it

  1. Приймайте по одній таблетці двічі на день
  2. Проковтніть із водою після їжі
  3. Не вживайте алкоголь під час лікування
  4. Зберігати в прохолодному сухому місці
  5. Зверніться до лікаря, якщо біль не минає

What the app gave back

  1. Take one tablet twice on
  2. day
  3. Swallowed with water after eating
  4. Don't drink alcohol during treatment
  5. Store in a cool dry place
  6. Contact your doctor if pain is not going

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

The dose line split in two when read and came back as "Take one tablet twice on" and "day", which still gives the right dose. Alcohol, storage and when to see a doctor are all right.

A museum placard

Printed on it

  1. Старий міст
  2. Міст був побудований у 1580 році.
  3. Він був зруйнований під час війни та відбудований з первісного каміння.
  4. Сьогодні це найвідвідуваніша пам'ятка регіону.
  5. Фотографувати без спалаху дозволено.

What the app gave back

  1. Old bridge
  2. The bridge was built in 1580.
  3. It was destroyed during the war and
  4. rebuilt from primitive stones.
  5. Today is the most remarkable
  6. the region.
  7. Photographing without flash is allowed.

Less tidy. "Сьогодні це найвідвідуваніша пам'ятка" came back as "Today is the most remarkable", so the point that it is the most visited monument is lost, and the original stones became "primitive stones". The date and the flash rule are right.

Questions

Does Ukrainian camera translation work offline?

No, and no iPhone app can make it. The phone’s own text recognition cannot read the Ukrainian script offline. SofiLingo keeps the photograph and translates it the moment you are back online, and typed Ukrainian works offline in the meantime.

Does typed Ukrainian translation work offline?

Yes. Download the Ukrainian pack once, over wifi, and typing runs entirely on the phone from then on. That is true of all 58 languages.

How good is the Ukrainian translation?

Good enough for menus, signs and tickets, and not for anything that matters legally or medically. The two examples on this page are unedited, mistakes included, so you can judge it yourself before you pay anything.

Can SofiLingo hear spoken Ukrainian?

It depends on your iPhone. Spoken translation uses Apple’s own speech packs, which cover about half of the 58 languages and differ from phone to phone, so the app tells you before you start if it cannot hear Ukrainian.

Take it with you

The first 15 translations are free, with ads and no card. Download the Ukrainian pack before you go and the phone can do the rest on its own.
