Translate Hindi, Devanagari and all.
Your iPhone can read Devanagari on its own and has a habit of losing whole lines while it does it — a station sign came back with the station's own name missing. With a connection nothing is lost, which is why the camera takes one when it is offered. What a connection cannot fix is on this page too.
Typing works with no signal
Download the Hindi pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.
The camera reads it better online
Your iPhone can read Hindi on its own, and reads it more accurately with a connection — so it uses the connection when there is one and the phone when there is not.
Speech depends on your iPhone
Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Hindi rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.
The phone loses lines, not letters
The same printed sign, read by the phone on its own and then with a connection. The Hindi is known because we printed it.
Printed on it
- मुख्य स्टेशन
- प्लेटफ़ॉर्म 3
- हवाई अड्डे की ट्रेनें
- चढ़ने से पहले टिकट खरीदें
- बाहर निकलने का रास्ता दाईं ओर
The phone on its own
Read as
- प्लेटफ़ॉर्म 3
- हवाई अडे की ट्रें चढ़ने से पहले टिकट खरीदें
- बाहर निकलने का रास्ता दाई ओर
Gave back
- Platform 3
- Buy tickets before flying air
- Way to exit
With a connection
Read as
- मुख्य स्टेशन
- प्लेटफ़ॉर्म 3
- हवाई अड्डे की ट्रेनें
- चढ़ने से पहले टिकट खरीदें
- बाहर निकलने का रास्ता दाईं ओर
Gave back
- Main station
- Platform 3
- Airport Trains
- Buy tickets before climbing
- The right way to get out
Both readings are real runs on an iPhone against a page we had printed; the connected one is from 1 September 2026, the phone's own from the run before this language was routed. Nothing here is tidied up.
"मुख्य स्टेशन" is simply not in what the phone read — the sign lost its own name — and "हवाई अड्डे की ट्रेनें", the airport trains, was mangled into something that came back as "buy tickets before flying air". Three lines of information became two, and neither was the one you were looking for. With a connection, all five.
And what a connection cannot fix
Printed on it
- खतरा
- तारों को न छुएँ
- बच्चों को दूर रखें
- आपात स्थिति में प्रबंधक को बुलाएँ
What the app gave back
- Danger
- Do not touch the stars
- Keep the children away
- Call manager in emergency
Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.
Read perfectly, every character of it, on a page with a connection. And the second line says"do not touch the stars". तार is a wire; it is also a star; the sign means the first and the translator chose the second. Nothing about reading the letters more accurately can tell it which.
That is the honest limit of scanning, on every language on this site. Danger, keep children away and call the manager all arrived. The wires became stars, and you would work it out from the sign you were standing in front of — which is roughly the deal this app is offering. How the camera reads.
On a wall of text, with a connection
Printed on it
- दिन में दो बार एक गोली लें
- खाने के बाद पानी के साथ निगलें
- इलाज के दौरान शराब न पिएँ
- ठंडी और सूखी जगह पर रखें
- अगर दर्द जारी रहे तो डॉक्टर से पूछें
What the app gave back
- Take a pill twice a day
- Swallow with water after eating
- Do not drink alcohol during treatment
- Keep on cold and dry place
- If the pain continues, ask the doctor
Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.
Five instructions, five usable answers, off a script the phone would have run into one paragraph on its own. The same label read by the phone alone began "put a shot twice a day" and put the storage line in the middle of the dosing one. What works with no internet.
Questions
Does Hindi translation work offline on iPhone?
Typing does, completely, once the Hindi pack is downloaded. The camera works offline as well, but the phone’s own recogniser drops lines and runs others together — so when there is a connection the photograph is read with one instead.
What goes wrong without a connection?
Whole lines. On a printed station sign the phone lost "मुख्य स्टेशन" — the station’s own name — and misread the line about airport trains, so the translation came back as "buy tickets before flying air". With a connection all five lines are there. Both readings are on this page.
Does a connection make the translation right?
No, and there is an example of that on this page. On a warning sign the reading is perfect either way and the translation still says "do not touch the stars": तार means a wire and it also means a star, and nothing about reading the letters more accurately tells a translator which one a sign means.
Can I still scan Hindi with no signal?
Yes. Offline scanning is not switched off, it is just less complete — and if you need it right, take the scan anyway and the app translates it again properly when you are back online.
