Translate Italian on the plate and on the wall.
Your iPhone reads Italian perfectly well — it is the lines it struggles with. Left to itself it runs a placard into one long paragraph and reads an Il as an I with a bar, and the translation then has to guess at a sentence that has lost its shape. With a connection it does not, so the camera takes one when it is offered.
Typing works with no signal
Download the Italian pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.
The camera reads it better online
Your iPhone can read Italian on its own, and reads it more accurately with a connection — so it uses the connection when there is one and the phone when there is not.
Speech depends on your iPhone
Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Italian rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.
The words survive. The sentence does not.
The same printed placard, read by the phone on its own and then with a connection. The Italian is known because we printed it.

Both readings are real runs on an iPhone against a page we had printed; the connected one is from 1 September 2026, the phone's own from the run before this language was routed. Nothing here is tidied up.
"Il Ponte Vecchio" read as "I| Ponte Vecchio", and the title came back untranslated as "I | Ponte Vecchio". Everything after it is right in both — this is not a language the phone cannot read. It is a page whose five lines arrived as one, with a capital letter and a bar where an article should be, and a translator doing its best with the result.

Same shape of problem on a label: the phone ran all five instructions together and gave back one long sentence, "Take a tablet twice a day ingest with water after meals do not drink alcohol…". Every word is there and it reads like a wall. With a connection they are five lines again, which on a medicine label is most of the point. What works with no internet.

Six lines, six right — and the phone on its own produced exactly the same answer, word for word. A menu is short lines with nothing to run together, which is why Italian scanning with no signal is perfectly usable for the thing most people are actually doing with it. Translating a menu.
Questions
Does Italian translation work offline on iPhone?
Typing does, completely, once the Italian pack is downloaded. The camera works offline as well; it simply reads the layout of a page better with a connection, so the app uses one when there is one and the phone when there is not.
If the phone reads the words, why does it need the internet?
Because a page is not only words. On a printed monument placard the phone ran five lines into a single paragraph and read "Il Ponte Vecchio" as "I| Ponte Vecchio", so the title came back as "I | Ponte Vecchio" instead of "The old bridge". With a connection the lines stay separate and the title translates. Both readings are on this page.
Is it good enough for an Italian menu?
Yes, and it is the easiest thing it does — there is an unedited menu on this page that came back clean on the phone alone. Long connected prose on a wall is where the difference shows.
Can I speak Italian into it?
That depends on your iPhone rather than on the app: spoken translation uses Apple’s own speech packs, and which languages a phone can hear differs from phone to phone. The app tells you when it cannot hear the one you have picked.
