Translate Marathi, and know where it is weak.
Marathi shares its script with Hindi, so it shares the same fix: your iPhone reads Devanagari better with a connection, and the camera takes one when it can. Reading is not this language's problem, though. The translation is, and this page shows you where.
Typing works with no signal
Download the Marathi pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.
The camera reads it better online
Your iPhone can read Marathi on its own, and reads it more accurately with a connection — so it uses the connection when there is one and the phone when there is not.
Speech depends on your iPhone
Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Marathi rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.
The reading was the easy half
The same printed sign, read by the phone on its own and then with a connection. The Marathi is known because we printed it.

Both readings are real runs on an iPhone against a page we had printed; the connected one is from 1 September 2026, the phone's own from the run before this language was routed. Nothing here is tidied up.
On its own the phone lost the platform number outright — "फलाट 3" read as "फलाट" — and ran the rest into one line that came back as "the right to take tickets to the airport before climbing the trains". With a connection every character is correct.
And then the correct reading produced "Falat 3". फलाट is platform; the translator transliterated it instead of translating it. The number you needed is there and the word beside it is Marathi spelled in English letters.

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.
"पावासोबत" — with pav, the bread — came back as "with a brave". The other five lines are fine. On a medicine label the same thing happens to "गिळा", swallow, which arrives as "Geela", and on the placard "जुना पूल" becomes "Old pool" rather than old bridge.
This is the weakest translation of any language with a page here, and it is on the page rather than left for you to discover in a restaurant.
One more thing, about our own measuring
These examples are scored two ways. The reading is compared against text we printed ourselves, so it is solid ground. The translation is compared against English written by the person who built the app — fine for the major languages, and for Marathi not expert. So a weak Marathi translation score may be partly the yardstick rather than the app.
That is why this page shows you the output instead of a number. Everything above is exactly what the app produced, and you are better placed than any score to judge it. How the camera reads · the same script in Hindi.
Questions
Does Marathi translation work offline on iPhone?
Typing does, completely, once the Marathi pack is downloaded. The camera works offline as well; the phone’s own recogniser drops lines and marks, so when there is a connection the photograph is read with one instead.
How good is the Marathi translation?
It is the weakest of the languages with a page on this site, and there are unedited examples here showing why: a platform came back transliterated as "Falat 3" rather than translated, "with bread" became "with a brave", and "swallow" became "Geela". The sense of a sign usually survives. Individual words often do not.
Is that measured or an impression?
Measured, with a caveat we will state rather than hide. The reading is scored against text we printed, so it is solid. The translation is scored against English written by the app’s author, and for Marathi that is not expert ground — so a weak translation score may be partly the yardstick. What is on this page is the app’s own unedited output either way.
Should I use it in Maharashtra?
For menus, signs, tickets and getting the gist of a notice, yes — and read the English with a little suspicion rather than none. For anything medical, legal or contractual, no, which is true of every language in the app and more true of this one.
