Translate Greek, signal or no signal.
Typed Greek translation runs on your phone with nothing connected. The camera is the part nobody else will tell you about: an iPhone cannot read the Greek alphabet offline at all, whatever an app's front page says. Here is what this one does about it.
Typing works with no signal
Download the Greek pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.
The camera needs a connection
An iPhone cannot read the Greek script offline at all. With a signal the photograph is read and translated; without one the scan is kept and translated the moment you are back online, so the sign is not lost.
Speech depends on your iPhone
Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Greek rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.
Scan it anyway, and let it catch up

That is the whole answer to Greek. You do not stand there waiting for a bar of signal and you do not lose the sign — you take the photograph, put the phone away, and the translation is there later. What else works with no internet.
Two real ones, printed and photographed
Both went through the app on an iPhone from pages we had printed, so the Greek is known rather than guessed. What came back is below it, unedited.
Printed on it
- Κεντρικός Σταθμός
- Αποβάθρα 3
- Τρένα για το αεροδρόμιο
- Αγοράστε το εισιτήριό σας πριν την επιβίβαση
- Έξοδος δεξιά
What the app gave back
- Central station
- Platform 3
- Trains for the airport
- Buy your ticket before
- boarding
- Exit right
Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.
Every line usable, and the platform number survived — "Αποβάθρα 3" came back as "Platform 3", which the Spanish sign did not manage. This is what the good case looks like.
Printed on it
- Κίνδυνος
- Μην αγγίζετε τα καλώδια
- Κρατήστε τα παιδιά μακριά
- Καλέστε τον υπεύθυνο σε περίπτωση έκτακτης ανάγκης
What the app gave back
- Danger
- Do not touch the wires
- Keep children away
- Call him responsible in case
- emergency
Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.
And this is the bad one. "Καλέστε τον υπεύθυνο" — call the person in charge — came back as "Call him responsible", and the sentence then broke across a line and lost its sense.Danger, wires and children all arrived intact, which is most of what a warning sign is for, but the instruction at the end of it did not.
It is on this page for the same reason the Greek camera limitation is: a page that showed only the station sign would be describing a different product from the one you would download.
Questions
Does Greek camera translation work offline?
No, and no iPhone app can make it. The phone’s own text recognition does not read the Greek alphabet without a connection. SofiLingo keeps the photograph and translates it automatically the moment you are back online, so the sign is not lost — and typed Greek translation works offline in the meantime.
Does typed Greek translation work offline?
Yes. Download the Greek pack once, over wifi, and typing runs entirely on the phone from then on. That is true of all 58 languages; it is only the camera that depends on the script.
Can I photograph a Greek menu and read it later?
Yes. Take the scan with no signal and it is kept with the picture. The next time the phone is online it translates on its own and appears in Scans — which is the sensible way to use it on a day out where the signal comes and goes.
How good is the Greek translation?
Good enough for menus, signs and tickets, and not good enough for anything that matters legally or medically. There are two unedited examples on this page, one of which goes noticeably wrong, so you can judge it yourself before you pay anything.
Take it with you
The first 15 translations are free, with ads and no card. Download the Greek pack before you go and the phone can do the rest on its own.
