Tamil

Translate Tamil, signal or no signal.

Typed Tamil translation runs on your iPhone with nothing connected. The camera needs a signal: an iPhone cannot read the Tamil script offline, so a scan taken without one is kept and translated when you are back online.

Typing works with no signal

Download the Tamil pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.

The camera needs a connection

An iPhone cannot read the Tamil script offline at all. With a signal the photograph is read and translated; without one the scan is kept and translated the moment you are back online, so the sign is not lost.

Speech depends on your iPhone

Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Tamil rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.

Two real ones, printed and photographed

Both went through the app on an iPhone from pages we had printed, so the Tamil is known rather than guessed. What came back is below it, unedited.

A restaurant menu

Printed on it

  1. இன்றைய மெனு
  2. ரொட்டியுடன் காய்கறி சூப்
  3. உருளைக்கிழங்குடன் வறுத்த கோழி
  4. இன்றைய புதிய மீன்
  5. சாக்லேட் கேக்
  6. காபி மற்றும் தேநீர் அடங்கும்

What the app gave back

  1. Today's menu
  2. Vegetable soup with bread
  3. Fried chicken with potatoes
  4. Today's new fish
  5. Chocolate cake
  6. Includes coffee and tea

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

Every dish came through. "இன்றைய புதிய மீன்" came back as "Today's new fish" rather than fresh, and the chicken is "Fried" rather than grilled, but nobody orders the wrong thing from it.

A museum placard

Printed on it

  1. பழைய பாலம்
  2. இந்தப் பாலம் 1580 இல் கட்டப்பட்டது.
  3. போரில் இது அழிக்கப்பட்டு மூல கற்களால் மீண்டும் கட்டப்பட்டது.
  4. இன்று இது இப்பகுதியில் அதிகம் பார்வையிடப்படும் நினைவுச்சின்னம்.
  5. ஃபிளாஷ் இல்லாமல் புகைப்படம் எடுக்க அனுமதி உண்டு.

What the app gave back

  1. Old bridge
  2. This bridge was built in 1580.
  3. It is destroyed in battle and raw stones
  4. Re-built.
  5. Today this is too much in the region
  6. The monument to be visited.
  7. Take photo without flash
  8. Have permission.

Hard to follow. Long lines were split when they were read and the translation followed the breaks: the monument line came back as "Today this is too much in the region" and "The monument to be visited". The date and "Take photo without flash" were right.

Questions

Does Tamil camera translation work offline?

No, and no iPhone app can make it. The phone’s own text recognition cannot read the Tamil script offline. SofiLingo keeps the photograph and translates it the moment you are back online, and typed Tamil works offline in the meantime.

Does typed Tamil translation work offline?

Yes. Download the Tamil pack once, over wifi, and typing runs entirely on the phone from then on. That is true of all 58 languages.

How good is the Tamil translation?

Good enough for menus, signs and tickets, and not for anything that matters legally or medically. The two examples on this page are unedited, mistakes included, so you can judge it yourself before you pay anything.

Can SofiLingo hear spoken Tamil?

It depends on your iPhone. Spoken translation uses Apple’s own speech packs, which cover about half of the 58 languages and differ from phone to phone, so the app tells you before you start if it cannot hear Tamil.

Take it with you

The first 15 translations are free, with ads and no card. Download the Tamil pack before you go and the phone can do the rest on its own.
