Romanian

Translate Romanian, with no signal at all.

Typed Romanian translation and the camera both run on your iPhone, so a menu or a sign in Romanian can be read in flight mode. Below are two real ones, printed, photographed and translated by the app, and left unedited.

Typing works with no signal

Download the Romanian pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.

The camera reads it on the phone

Your iPhone reads Romanian from a photograph itself. Nothing is sent anywhere, and it works with the phone in flight mode.

Speech depends on your iPhone

Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Romanian rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.

Two real ones, printed and photographed

Both went through the app on an iPhone from pages we had printed, so the Romanian is known rather than guessed. What came back is below it, unedited.

A warning notice

Printed on it

  1. Pericol
  2. Nu atingeți cablurile
  3. Nu lăsați copiii să se apropie
  4. Sunați managerul în caz de urgență

What the app gave back

  1. Danger
  2. Do not touch cables
  3. Don't let children get closer
  4. Call the manager in case of emergency

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

All four lines right. "Nu lăsați copiii să se apropie" came back as "Don't let children get closer", a fair way of saying keep children away, and "Call the manager in case of emergency" is exact.

A railway station sign

Printed on it

  1. Gara Centrală
  2. Peronul 3
  3. Trenuri spre aeroport
  4. Cumpărați biletul înainte de urcare
  5. Ieșire la dreapta

What the app gave back

  1. Central Station
  2. Pulon 3
  3. Trains to the airport
  4. Buy the ticket before climbing
  5. learn to the right

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

And this is the bad one. "Peronul 3" came back as "Pulon 3", and "Ieșire la dreapta" as "learn to the right", so the platform word is garbled and the exit is lost entirely; the exit line was misread (its capital I as a small l) before it was translated. The airport line is right.

Questions

Does Romanian camera translation work offline?

Yes. Your iPhone reads Romanian from a photograph itself, so a scan works in flight mode and nothing is sent anywhere.

Does typed Romanian translation work offline?

Yes. Download the Romanian pack once, over wifi, and typing runs entirely on the phone from then on. That is true of all 58 languages.

How good is the Romanian translation?

Good enough for menus, signs and tickets, and not for anything that matters legally or medically. The two examples on this page are unedited, mistakes included, so you can judge it yourself before you pay anything.

Can SofiLingo hear spoken Romanian?

It depends on your iPhone. Spoken translation uses Apple’s own speech packs, which cover about half of the 58 languages and differ from phone to phone, so the app tells you before you start if it cannot hear Romanian.
