Norwegian

Translate Norwegian, with no signal at all.

Typed Norwegian translation and the camera both run on your iPhone, so a menu or a sign in Norwegian can be read in flight mode. Below are two real ones, printed, photographed and translated by the app, and left unedited.

Typing works with no signal

Download the Norwegian pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.

The camera reads it on the phone

Your iPhone reads Norwegian from a photograph itself. Nothing is sent anywhere, and it works with the phone in flight mode.

Speech depends on your iPhone

Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Norwegian rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.

Two real ones, printed and photographed

Both went through the app on an iPhone from pages we had printed, so the Norwegian is known rather than guessed. What came back is below it, unedited.

A restaurant menu

Printed on it

  1. Dagens meny
  2. Grønnsakssuppe med brød
  3. Grillet kylling med poteter
  4. Dagens ferske fisk
  5. Sjokoladekake
  6. Kaffe og te er inkludert

What the app gave back

  1. Today's menu
  2. Vegetable soup with bread
  3. Grilled chicken with potatoes
  4. Today's fresh fish
  5. Chocolate cake
  6. Coffee and tea are included

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

All six lines right, from "Today's menu" to "Coffee and tea are included", with every dish named correctly.

A museum placard

Printed on it

  1. Den Gamle Broen
  2. Broen ble bygget i 1580.
  3. Den ble ødelagt under krigen og gjenoppbygd med de opprinnelige steinene.
  4. I dag er den regionens mest besøkte monument.
  5. Fotografering uten blits er tillatt.

What the app gave back

  1. The old bridge
  2. The bridge was built in 1580. It was destroyed during the war and rebuilt with the original rocks. Today, the region's most described monument. Photography without flash is allowed.

A reading slip changed a word: the ø in "besøkte" was dropped when the placard was read, and the line came back as "Today, the region's most described monument" rather than most visited. The date, the war and "Photography without flash is allowed" are right.

Questions

Does Norwegian camera translation work offline?

Yes. Your iPhone reads Norwegian from a photograph itself, so a scan works in flight mode and nothing is sent anywhere.

Does typed Norwegian translation work offline?

Yes. Download the Norwegian pack once, over wifi, and typing runs entirely on the phone from then on. That is true of all 58 languages.

How good is the Norwegian translation?

Good enough for menus, signs and tickets, and not for anything that matters legally or medically. The two examples on this page are unedited, mistakes included, so you can judge it yourself before you pay anything.

Can SofiLingo hear spoken Norwegian?

It depends on your iPhone. Spoken translation uses Apple’s own speech packs, which cover about half of the 58 languages and differ from phone to phone, so the app tells you before you start if it cannot hear Norwegian.
