Maltese

Translate Maltese, with no signal at all.

Typed Maltese translation runs on your iPhone with nothing connected. The camera reads Maltese on the phone too, and more accurately online, so it uses a signal when there is one. Below are two real scans, unedited.

Typing works with no signal

Download the Maltese pack once, over hotel wifi, and typed translation runs on the phone from then on — as it does in all 58 languages.

The camera reads it better online

Your iPhone can read Maltese on its own, and reads it more accurately with a connection — so it uses the connection when there is one and the phone when there is not.

Speech depends on your iPhone

Spoken translation uses Apple's own speech packs, which cover about half of these languages and differ from phone to phone — so the app tells you if it cannot hear Maltese rather than failing while someone waits. How speech works.

Two real ones, printed and photographed

Both went through the app on an iPhone from pages we had printed, so the Maltese is known rather than guessed. What came back is below it, unedited.

A pharmacy label

Printed on it

  1. Ħu pillola waħda darbtejn kuljum
  2. Ibla' bl-ilma wara l-ikel
  3. Tixrobx alkoħol waqt il-kura
  4. Aħżen f'post frisk u niexef
  5. Staqsi lit-tabib tiegħek jekk l-uġigħ ikompli

What the app gave back

  1. take one tablet twice a day
  2. Swallow with water after eating
  3. Do not drink alcohol during treatment
  4. Store in a cool and dry place
  5. Ask your doctor if pain continues

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

All five lines right. The dose, "Do not drink alcohol during treatment" and the storage line all match the original.

A restaurant menu

Printed on it

  1. Il-menu tal-lum
  2. Soppa tal-ħaxix bil-ħobż
  3. Tiġieġ mixwi bil-patata
  4. Ħut frisk tal-ġurnata
  5. Kejk taċ-ċikkulata
  6. Kafè u te inklużi

What the app gave back

  1. The menu of today
  2. Grass soup with bread
  3. Roasted chicken with potatoes
  4. Fresh Hut of the day
  5. Chocolate cake
  6. Coffee and TE included

Read and translated on an iPhone, 1 September 2026, from a page we had printed — so the original is known rather than guessed. Nothing here is tidied up.

Two dishes went wrong. The Ħ of "Ħut" was read as a plain H, and the fish came back as "Fresh Hut of the day"; the soup came back as "Grass soup with bread". The chicken and the cake are right.

Questions

Does Maltese camera translation work offline?

Yes, and better with a connection. The phone reads Maltese on its own; the online reader is more accurate, so SofiLingo uses it when there is a signal and the phone when there is not.

Does typed Maltese translation work offline?

Yes. Download the Maltese pack once, over wifi, and typing runs entirely on the phone from then on. That is true of all 58 languages.

How good is the Maltese translation?

Good enough for menus, signs and tickets, and not for anything that matters legally or medically. The two examples on this page are unedited, mistakes included, so you can judge it yourself before you pay anything.

Can SofiLingo hear spoken Maltese?

It depends on your iPhone. Spoken translation uses Apple’s own speech packs, which cover about half of the 58 languages and differ from phone to phone, so the app tells you before you start if it cannot hear Maltese.
