How-to

Make the translation sound like a person.

When SofiLingo reads a translation aloud it uses your iPhone's voices. The basic ones sound robotic; the Enhanced and Premium voices, a free download in Settings, sound far more natural.

Download a better voice

  1. Open Settings, then Accessibility → Read & Speak → Voices. (On iOS 18 and earlier, Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices.)
  2. Tap the language. It may be split by country; any of them works.
  3. Tap any voice with a download arrow beside it. Enhanced or Premium is the one you want.

SofiLingo notices the new voice and uses it from then on.

Choosing between voices

In SofiLingo, each language lists its voices: tap the speaker to hear one, and tap the name to use it.

If no voice is installed for a language, there is nothing for the phone to speak with: SofiLingo says so and points you to Settings. Reading the screen still works.

Do it on Wi-Fi

Enhanced and Premium voices are larger downloads than the basic ones. Get them at home, alongside your language packs.

Questions

Why does the translation sound robotic?

Your iPhone is using its basic voice for that language. Download an Enhanced or Premium voice in Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak → Voices.

Do better voices cost anything?
